Epidemiologic Characteristics of Vibrio cholerae Strains Isolated in Iri Area in 1991

We compared the epidemiologic markers of 12 Vibrio cholerae strains(11 strains isolated at Wonkwang University Hospital, 1 strain at Chonnam University Hospital) during an outbreak of cholera in the summer of 1991. All 12 strains showed identical
or
similar characteristics in colony morphology on various media; similar growth patterns in nutrient broth supplemented with increasing concentration of NaCl; almost identical biochemical characteristics and antibiogram. All strains belonged to the
same
serogroup 01, subtype Ogawa and the same biogroup Eltor. The restriction enzyme (Hind III, EcoRI, Pst I) profiles of 12 strains were very similar. These results suggest that the 12 strains isolated in the summer of 1991, are very closely related.
